Compression Guide

Compression. Explained.

All 2XU garments are based on graduated compression — a scientifically proven technology that improves blood circulation, reduces muscle vibration, and speeds up recovery. Here, we explain how it works and help you find the right level.

The Science

What is graduated compression?

Graduated compression means the pressure is strongest furthest from the heart, at the ankles or wrists — and gradually decreases upward toward the heart. This helps blood circulate back to the heart more efficiently, providing three key benefits:

  • Increased oxygen supply to the muscles during activity
  • Reduced muscle vibration and, thus, less fatigue
  • Faster removal of waste products (e.g., lactic acid) after exercise
Compression Levels

Four levels. One for every need.

Every 2XU collection features a specific compression level tailored to the activity and purpose. From gentle support for everyday life to maximum recovery after competition.

15–20 mmHg

Mild

Everyday life and travel

Light, comfortable compression for everyday use and lighter activities. Provides support without restricting mobility. Perfect as a first step into compression.

T.ex. Training, long flights, or sitting all day

20-23 mmHg

Moderate

Training and running

Balanced compression for training and competition. Stabilizes muscles, reduces vibrations, and improves endurance — without compromising comfort.

T.ex. The gym session or a 5–10 km run

23-25 mmHg

Firm

Race day and high intensity

Powerful, targeted compression for maximum performance. Designed for athletes who demand the ultimate in muscle support during intense activity and competition.

T.ex. Race day or interval training

25–28 mmHg

Recovery

Post-workout

Our strongest compression — designed specifically for use after training. Maximizes blood circulation to speed up muscle recovery and reduce swelling.

T.ex. Immediately after a tough workout or a long run

FAQ

Answers to the most common questions about compression

What benefits can compression provide?

During exercise:
Compression helps stabilize muscles and reduce muscle vibration. It can improve body awareness and movement efficiency, wick away sweat, and help regulate temperature.

After exercise:
Compression can improve blood circulation and recovery, help reduce muscle soreness and swelling, and help the body recover between training sessions.

How do I know which compression is right for me?

Compression isn't a one-size-fits-all solution. The right piece depends on:

  • When you're wearing it: during performance, training, and recovery, or solely for recover
  • How you're moving
  • What your body needs next

What is compression fabric?

Compression fabrics are engineered materials designed to balance support, flexibility, and durability.

They typically use high-stretch yarns and circular knit structures that provide 360° stretch, allowing the fabric to move with the body while maintaining consistent compression.

Do different fabric structures matter?

Yes. The performance of compression garments depends on several factors, including:

  • Yarn type
  • Fabric density
  • Knit structure
  • Garment construction

Together these elements determine how supportive, breathable and durable the garment is.

What is graduated compression?

Graduated compression means that the pressure is highest at the outermost parts of the body, such as the ankle or calf, and gradually decreases upward.

This design is developed to support blood circulation and help the body transport oxygenated blood to the muscles more efficiently.

It is the technology behind all 2XU compression garments and a key factor for both performance and recovery.

Which compression level should I choose?

The right compression level depends on how you train and what kind of support you want.

Mild Compression
Suitable for everyday wear and lighter activities such as workouts, gym, walking, and running, where you want a lighter feel with good freedom of movement.

Moderate Compression
Ideal for the gym and running, where you want good support, reduced muscle vibration, and faster recovery.

Firm Compression
Designed for high-intensity training and running where extra muscle support and stability are a priority.

Extra Firm Compression
Perfect for recovery after races, intense workouts, and high-impact activities to speed up recovery

If you’re unsure, we recommend starting with a mild or moderate compression level and choosing based on your activity and personal preference.

Can compression help reduce muscle soreness?

Regular training tights are primarily designed for comfort, fit, and freedom of movement. 2XU’s compression garments, on the other hand, are engineered with graduated compression and technical materials that provide targeted support to the muscles during activity.

This means the garments are designed to:

  • Support blood circulation
  • Reduce muscle oscillation
  • Provide increased muscle stability
  • Promote recovery after exercise

The result is a garment that not only feels great to wear but is also designed to help you perform and recover in the best possible way.

Is compression only for sports?

No. While compression used for training and competition, compression garments can also be worn for:

  • Recovery
  • Long periods of standing or sitting
  • General circulation support
  • Travel

How should compression clothing fit?

Compression garments should feel frim and supportive but not restrictive. A good fit will:

  • Stay close to the body
  • Allow full range of motion
  • Avoid pinching and numbness

Choosing the correct size ensures the garment deliveres the intended level of compression.

What are compression tights?

Compression tights are performance garments designed to support the body during training, recovery and everyday movement.

Available in a range of fits, silhouettes and colors, they're built to help you feel and look your best — whatever the activity. They can be worn during workouts, as a base layer, or post-exercise to support recovery.

Why use compression garments?

Compression tights help support performance and recovery by:

  • Supporting blood circulation
  • Reducing muscle fatigue
  • Keeping muscles warm
  • Aiding post-workout recovery

They're suitable for training, running, sport, leisure and travel.

What is the difference between compression tights and leggings?

Leggings are designed mainly for comfort and style.

Compression tights are engineered to actively support muscles, blood circulation and recovery through targeted compression.

Do compression garments really work?

Yes. When compression tights are properly designed and fitted, they help support blood circulation, reduce muscle soreness, and assist recovery - helping you move and recover more efficiently.

Are compression garments only for elite athletes?

No. Compression tights are designed for all activity levels—from everyday movers to elite athletes. With different compression levels available for training, race, recovery, travel, and everyday wear.
